Do we really need another rich teen soap? We’ve already got
“Gossip Girl” and “The Hills,” so why is the long-lost “Beverly Hills” scheduled to resurrect
tonight?
Hard to tell. Maybe the ratings-challenged CW hopes for
“90210” to bring back the huge popularity of the ‘90s show, in spite of the
fact that the spin off did not sound like a good idea to critics.
And here we are. This is the trick which makes us wonder how
bad “90210” really is. If the fresh series really were good, the network would
have gone all-out to ensure critics that the new faces and stories surpassed
all expectations. Unfortunately, critics were not allowed to preview any
episodes of the much talked about “90210,” as CW cited a “strategic marketing
decision,” adding they were not hiding anything.
However, right now everybody is convinced they were concealing
a really bad series, but the truth will nevertheless be unveiled tonight, as
the long-awaited series will surely lure numerous under-18 youngsters and the
most curious of us into watching it.
In the original ZIP-coded soap, Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and
her twin brother Brandon (Jason Priestley) moved to “the big city”, ending up
in the classy West Beverly Hills High. They get acquainted to the lifestyles of
the wealthy, although at first they are overwhelmed by the radical change.
In “90210,” just like in the old “Beverly Hills” times when
Brenda and Brandon parked their Chevy in the high school lot next to BMWs and
Porsches, other teens, Annie (Shenae Grimes of “Degrassi: The Next Generation”)
and Dixon (Tristan Wilds of “The Wire”), go to school with no intention of
studying. And, according to them, fitting in comes first.
Although there’s no Donna, Dylan or Steve anymore, Shannen
Doherty and Jennie Garth will fill the shoes of Brenda and Kelly, respectively,
once more. However, they will play the grown-ups of the drama this time, leaving
behind the teenage good old days.
Everybody whishes for “90210” to be a pleasant surprise, but
the expectations are low and there’s not much hope left. However, it is still a
possibility the ZIP-coded series takes the wind out of our sails.
