A Virginia Tech student was killed and another severely injured
Saturday night when a motorist crashed into a group of 5 students walking on
campus.
Christine McNabb, 20, of Manassas,
was immediately taken to Roanoke
Memorial Hospital
where, three hours later, she was pronounced dead, the Washington Post wrote.
“When we got there, they didn’t take us to Christine; they
took us to a room. The doctor said she had bad news: that Christine didn’t make
it. They took us up to see her. The doctor explained that she suffered massive
head trauma at the scene. It was her opinion that Christine had died on the
spot,” McNabb’s stepfather, Gary Secen said quoted by the Post.
An ambulance took Daniel Budzenski, 19, of California,
Md. to the
same hospital where he was treated for severe injuries. He was listed in
serious condition Sunday night. Both teenagers were sophomores in the College of Engineering.
The other two struck students were treated at the scene and
were not taken to the hospital, police said. The fifth student was not hurt.
The university said in a news release that the five students
were at a crosswalk at Duck Pond
Drive and Washington Street about 6:20 p.m. when
four of them were hit by a 1993 Mercury sedan. The driver of the car stopped,
and police and rescue crews were announced.
Virginia Tech police are currently investigating the
incident, but said alcohol was not a factor. They have charged Joshua Sales,
20, of Blacksburg
with driving with an expired registration and not having insurance. Sales is
not a student at Virginia Tech. Police said he might face additional charges.
