Virginia Tech’s officials
announced on Thursday that the classroom wing that was the scene of the
deadliest mass shooting attack in the United States' history would be transformed into the so-called Center
for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention.
On April 16, a student called
Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and himself and wounded many others in an insane
attack that marked Virginia Tech’s history forever. Seung-Hui Cho’s case
signaled once again that inner frustrations and madness could be so harmful and
that violence must be prevented. This is why after almost seven months of
debates Virginia Tech’s officials decided to transform the scene of the
massacre into a place of peace.
The second floor of Norris Hall
at Virginia Tech will never be used for general classes, as it will house the
new Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention. The University plans to
spend almost one million dollars for making the wing look completely different.
Virginia Tech announced this plan
at a news conference on the Blacksburg
campus. In addition to the peace studies center, part of the space of about
4,300 square feet will be used to enhance engineering education.
"I am extremely confident
that the decision we announce today will help future generations of students
more deeply understand the world we live in today," said Charles Steger,
Virginia Tech’s President.
