According to officials, three people were killed by police
when they’ve opened fire on a Hindus group which set on fire a police station during
the clashes between Hindus and Christians.
The clash occurred in the Orissa state on Thursday. These
killings bring the death toll number up to four since the violence erupted on
Christmas Eve, four days ago, between the Hindu majority and the community of
Christians. The reason for the eruption is due to Christianity conversion,
Philly.com reports.
The police station in Christian dominated Brahmanigaon
village in the Kandhamal district was attacked by the Hindus. They were
complaining that they were not properly protected against the Christians. This
comes after a group of Christians burned on Thursday afternoon some Hindus
homes as answer of earlier Hindus attacks on churches.
Since Monday, 19 churches made from mud and thatch, were
burned by the Hindus, and several Christian homes were destroyed. Among those
homes is the one of Radhakant Nayak, a member of India's upper house of parliament.
On Friday Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, said that three
people were killed in the violence erupted at the police station. No details
were given.
Patnaik asked for more federal forces to be sent into the
area after the curfew failed to put an end to the violence.
The government said that it will deploy 300 paramilitary
forces to the region.
According to Superintendent of Police Narsingh Bhol, 25
people were detained, both from Hindu and Christian communities.
The government decided to probe the incidents by a retired
high court judge.
Patnaik said: “Retired justice of Orissa High Court Basudev
Panigrahi will probe the incidents under the commission of inquiry act,”
Earthtimes.org said.
In four months the one-man Panigrahi commission will have to
present the report to the state government.
The commission will have to find the people or organizations
that are behind the attacks.
District police was advised by the government to stay alert
in fear that other violence may erupt after the news of the four deaths.
