Video games makers are making the final preparations in order to ensure that they are ready to deliver games and consoles for the holiday season.
Nintendo is introducing two limited edition Nintendo DS bundles on November the 28th, which will include a Mario Red Nintendo DS with the “New Super Mario Bros.” game and an Ice Blue Nintendo DS with a matching carrying case and a copy of “Brain Age.” Nintendo also introduced recently in Japan its next generation portable, Nintendo DSi.
This device has two cameras, an SD card slot, an online game store, advanced music capabilities, larger screens and a slimmer body to the dual-screen handheld player. The DSi will be release in North America and Europe in 2009.
Sony, one of Nintendo’s rivals, will also launch a new portable game, the PSP 3000, which adds a high-resolution screen and a built-in microphone to let users call whoever between games or movies. Since the launch of its consoles, Sony shipped over 40 million PSPs worldwide. Newcomers in this business are Apple’s iPhone 3G and iPod Touch, which have also become popular gaming devices for vacationers. There are about 13 million iPhone 3Gs around the globe and over 1,500 iPods.
As for the sales of October, the marketing research company NPD reports that game software sales had a 35 percent increase and the hardware sales registered a 5 percent rise. All in all, the video game industry prospered by 18 percent. The bestseller is Nintendo’s Wii system, which has sold 13.4 million units since it was launched in 2006. It is followed by the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation3. The number one video game in October was “Fable II”, with 790,000 copies shipped.
