“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” Or Johansson, Cruz, Bardem, Woody Allen

Raise your hand if there is something you don’t agree with. Penelope Cruz remains equally beautiful and mysterious, despite/due to the fact that her English has improved significantly lately. Scarlett Johansson’s exquisiteness is ineffable, as we have already been accustomed. Any hands? Thought so. And the image of Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson kissing will linger in our thoughts (and dreams) for a long time. And still no raised hand.

If we put all these into a frame signed by Woody Allen, we have all the necessary hints. Allen is making a master comeback with another eery love story, but this time there is nothing similar to “Annie Hall” or “Manhattan,” but something more resembling to “Match Point.” Love, always the love, but in this case, the feeling is not projected by two people. Moreover, we’re not even making reference to a love triangle, but we’re talking more of a quartet engendering the passion.

All these said, and it’s still not enough to depict the dimensions of the exquisiteness. To all these, we add Barcelona and obviously, the breathtaking architecture of Gaudi. The movie, eloquently titled “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is set in Spain, a beautiful venue adorned by a yellow light that sprinkles pleasure and calm. The film depicts the story of two American women, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Johansson) who spend their summer vacation in Spain at a friend.

The plot takes a completely different turn when they meet Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). Cristina is eager to take another shot at love, Vicky completely loses her no-nonsense type and flames appear when Maria Elena (Cruz) returns to Juan Antonio, her ex-husband, after a suicide attempt.

Most probably, this is the first remarkable role for Cruz. She is equally crazy and charming, brilliant and frightening, and all the way funny. There are moments when she speaks English, there are moments when she speaks Spanish (she is genuine and persuasive in all of them), and in all moments her sizzling and word-fighting generate sparks (and flames and fires). And there is another movie in which she stars that is worth seeing: “Elegy,” an impeccable translation for the silver screen of Philip Roth’s novella “The Dying Animal.”

For those who are head over the heels with Johansson, bad luck. The 23-year old beauty is making preparations to tie the knot with her beau, 31-year old Ryan Reynolds. The star has been spotted paging through brides’ magazines, probably looking for a dress and get inspiration for accessories. (Don’t raise your hand now, you cannot object to her choice of saying “I Do”!)
