A recent study carried out by researchers at the University of New Mexico Medical School found out that Viagra improves the libido of women who are taking a certain class of antidepressants. The study is of great importance both to the pharmaceutical industry, which hopes to see increased sales in pills similar to Viagra, and to women who are following depression treatment.
The women that were selected for the study were of an average age of 37 and were taking antidepressants of the class know as SSRI, or selective serotonine re-uptake inhibitors, one of the most popular ones in America. The women were then divided into two groups. One of the groups was given Viagra and was told to take it one to two hours before sexual activity, the other one was given a placebo with the same instructions on how to be taken.
After 8 weeks, 72 percent of the women who were given Viagra reported that their sexual life has improved, while only 28 percent of the women who were given the placebo said the same thing. Based on these figures, researchers considered that the little blue pill is able to help women that are treating their depressions with SSRI drugs.
The finding is of great importance for women, because statistics say that they are twice as likely to suffer depressions as men, and the drugs they need to take to fight back against them have more serious debilitating sexual side effects than they have in the opposite sex. If further research will confirm the results of this study, women will be able to follow their depression treatments and still enjoy a normal sex life.
