Verizon Wireless, the second largest wireless operator in the United States, announced that starting tomorrow the Palm
Centro will be available through the company’s 3G wireless network. The deal
will surely be profitable on both parts, as the Centro, through Sprint and
AT&T, has sold so far more than one million units since its launch.
The Centro managed to significantly boost Palm’s incomes,
being one of the company’s biggest hits. The success is mainly related to the
company’s policy of offering a low-cost, consumer-oriented smart phone that
manages to fulfill the general market demands.
The device will be available in the Verizon stores starting tomorrow
and it will cost $100 with a two-year agreement. The monthly fee requested by
the company for its E-mail and Web service will be of $29.99.
The Centro offers multiple features and capabilities being
powered by an XScale processor. It comes equipped with 128MB of ROM and 64MB of
user-accessible RAM. The storage capacity can be expanded through its SD card
slot, which can handle cards up to 4 GB. Centro has a touch screen capable to
display 64K colors at 320 X 320 pixels and it integrates also a 1.3 Megapixel
camera with 2X digital zoom that can handle video. According to Palm, Centro’s
battery offers 3.5 hours of talk time.
The phone measures 4.2 inches high, 2.1 inches wide, and 0.7
inch thick, and it weighs a mere 4.2 ounces.
Palm is best known for the Treo line of phones, but is also
credited with the first popular handheld computing device the Palm Pilot. The
move to expand their business comes as Palm's smart phones are facing increased
pressure from competitors like RIM, Nokia and Apple.
