The Omnia smartphone has been around for months in the
European and Asian markets, but it has only been around for a few days in the
United States. Verizon Wireless added on Monday, days before Thanksgiving, the
Omnia touch-screen smartphone to its offer.
The phone has Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with Mobile
Suite as its operating system, allowing for users to edit documents in
PowerPoint, Excel and Word. Microsoft has also included Direct Push to better
organize multiple email accounts.
The Omnia also sports the Samsung TouchWiz user interface
which has special widgets intended for personalization, as well as an on-screen
QWERTY keyboard. The screen features Haptic feedback which vibrates to confirm
selection, as well as an optical mouse. For internet browsing, the phone offers
the Opera 9.5 Mobile Browser.
Other features include VZ Navigator’s GPS software, support
for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and installed codecs for Divx and Xvid movies.
The Omnia’s camera is a 5.0 megapixel autofocus model with an
LED flash bulb and a zoom function; the camera can record movies as well as
take still shots. Camera software features add face detection, panorama, split
shot and antishake settings, as well as SmileShot that automatically takes
pictures when it detects someone smiling.
The device’s weight is a low 4.34 ounces and the device
sports a 3.2 inch display screen. Its standard battery can last 346 minutes between
recharging.
The phone’s retail price is $249.99 after a $70 mail-in
rebate, that’s assuming you take a two-year service plan. The Omnia will be
also available online by Wednesday from the Verizon Wireless Web Site and in
business sales channel. Stores will see the device stocked come December 8.
