The September 12th train accident that caused the
death of 25 people and the injury of another 130 is marked by confusion as eye
witnesses claim the Veolia train caught a green light before crushing into a
freight train. On the other hand, company officials state that the light was
red and that the train engineer Robert Sanches, who was killed in the
collision, was distracted at the time.
The lack of reliable information
regarding the devastating crash is only causing more tension as mourning
families are entitled to know what really happened.
In an official statement, Veolia Transportation said that
they are deeply grieved by the unfortunate event and that it will do whatever
necessary to improve safety on the public transportation rails.
The accident in
Los Angeles only proves to show the slow adaptation of the European company to
the American transportation system. A debate concerning the necessary measures
needed for preventing such accidents from happening is much needed, this event
highlighting obvious flaws in the public transportation system.
More funding is needed in order for the latest equipments
and technology to be implemented and successfully used to prevent further
accidents from happening. Veolia Transportation stated that safety has been and
will always be the main concern and will take all the necessary steps to
improve in this matter even further.
Even so, the fact is that human error will
always be a factor of great importance in these kind of matters and this cannot
be denied. Public transportation is very important as it is used daily by
thousands of people and such tragic events only pose the question of their
reliability. Efforts are made to improve safety as Congress acted on a reform
aimed at safety on rail systems in the U.S.
