In an event that happens roughly every ever year but is in
many cases unobservable due to interference from daylight, the planets Venus
and Jupiter, which are the brightest in the sky, will move ever closer to each
other as the month of November moves on and light up the sky.
Right now, at the start of November, the two celestial
bodies are about 30 degrees away from each other in the sky, but as the month
goes on their relative positions will move closer until they are only going to
be 2 degrees apart on November 30 or December 1 (the date you’ll see it on depends
where on your time zone). For reference, 2 degrees is only a thumb’s width with
your arm extended.
Throughout the month of November Venus will be setting
between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., while Jupiter will be setting around 10 p.m. at the
start of the month, and then later at around 9 p.m.
Jupiter will be very easy to pick out from anywhere
worldwide, as it will be perceived as an exceptionally bright point of light
near the moon. Jupiter is ranked as the second-brightest point in the sky. The
honor of being the brightest as observed from Terra belongs to Venus.
Both planets will meet at a point close to a waxing crescent
moon, offering a truly beautiful sight to behold. If you’re at all interested
in the beauty of the heavens this is definitely an event to keep your eyes on. The
next time this will happen during the night, and therefore be observable from
the ground is in 2011.
