Velvet Revolver's Scott Weiland Arrested for DUI

Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland was arrested for DUI – ironically just a week after it was revealed his band had been denied entrance in Japan due to the members’ dappled backgrounds.

In hindsight, it would seem that Japanese authorities’ decision to “take exception with the backgrounds of various band members” was a wise one, as Scott Weiland, 40, was arrested Nov. 21 for driving under the influence of a drug after he crashed his car.

The singer was driving on a Los Angeles highway on Nov. 21 when he had the car accident. An officer noticed “signs of impairment” in Weiland and had him take field sobriety tests, which Weiland failed, according to a police report obtained by celebrity site TMZ.com.

The singer was taken to the Van Nuys Jail where he refused to take a blood or urine test, according to the police report. He was booked and released on $40,000 bail. He is due in court Dec. 13.

“Scott was not driving under the influence of a drug, legal or illegal,” publicist Kristine Ashton-Magnuson said in a statement. “He voluntarily took a breathalyzer test which the defense believes registers well within the legal limit. He is anxious to get to court ... and clear this matter up.”

Weiland’s arrest occurred just days after Velvet Revolver had posted a message on their official website, announcing that Japanese authorities had denied them visas, thus cancelling the Japanese leg of their tour. They were scheduled to perform four concerts between November 26 and November 30 in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Yokohama to promote their latest album “Libertad,” produced by Brendan O’Brien and released in July.

The message, posted Nov. 16, informed fans that the “increasingly tough Japanese immigration officials are taking exception with the backgrounds of various band members, which have included arrests.”

Velvet Revolver consists of lead singer Scott Weiland, former frontman of Stone Temple Pilots, and three members of legendary Guns N' Roses - Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, as well as Dave Kushner.

Reuters reported at the time that a spokesperson for the immigration department at the Justice Ministry declined to comment on individual cases. Under Japanese law, anyone with a drug conviction can be refused entry.

Earlier this year Weiland made headlines when he and his wife of 7 years, Mary Forsberg, had a flaming domestic incident – literally.

The couple was at a luxury hotel in Burbank, where they were staying with their two young children and a personal assistant. One of the hotel rooms suffered considerable damage, at the hands of Forsberg, it was reported at the time, but it was apparently only the beginning of arguing between husband and wife.

The missus set fire to Weiland’s clothes later that day, this time at their Burbank home. She burnt some $10,000 worth of clothes and shoes on the front lawn, police said at the time. She was arrested, booked at the Burbank jail, and subsequently released on $50,000 bond.

The full year Weiland has had so far may well be chronicled in the autobiography he recently announced he would write. The 40-year-old singer has said he has a publishing deal to write a memoir, in collaboration with David Ritz, who has co-written autobiographies for artists such as Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.
