The Las Vegas Monte Carlo Resort & Casino staff was forced to evacuate the building on Friday as fire engulfed sections of the upper floors. The blaze was brought under control after the guests of the casino left the building.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but several people were treated for smoke inhalation.
The blaze was first reported at approximately 11 a.m. in the south tower of the hotel complex owned by MGM Mirage, the world's second-largest casino operator. The building was immediately evacuated and the strip was shut down causing a traffic jam back onto Interstate-15.
The fire crews deployed managed to gain control of the blaze in approximately an hour, but the building remains closed until the investigations and inspections end.
The fire may have started on the hotel's roof, where welders were working, but this is the version of most of the media reports. The authorities haven’t reached a conclusion on that issue yet.
"We've been going door to door. All of our emergency procedures are working," said Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Mirage, about the evacuation. He added that some of the hotel’s guests were relocated to other MGM properties in the area, including the New York-New York and MGM Grand.
However, this is nothing compared to a fire which broke out in November 1980 at the MGM Grand. At least 80 people died and nearly 700 were injured then.
