The wild ‘80s rockers are back and David Lee Roth promises this time they will be around forever and ever to entertain us. First of all though, a reunion tour is in order.
Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen and David Lee Roth made rumors surrounding a possible reunion a certainty this Monday, during a press conference in Los Angeles.
David Lee Roth was his usual bubbly self-promoting self, oozing confidence that a Van Halen reunion will make lots of people happy. Which it probably will.
The new lineup includes the replacement of bassist Michael Anthony with Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s 16-year-old son and the long-awaited return of David Lee Roth, the lead singer replaced with Sammy Hagar 22 years ago.
Roth never played with Van Halen again after leaving in 1985. The last reunion the band had, in 2004, featured Hagar as lead singer.
This time around, the reunion tour includes 25 dates and it starts Sept. 27 in Charlotte, N. C. As Roth promised, the reunion will not end here.
“It's not like the Police - we're not going to do one tour, Roth said. “ The idea is that it will continue on and on.” He added, “This is not a reunion - this is a new band,” and talked about the rehearsals they’ve been diligently going through.
For now, the four artists have been getting reacquainted with their former hits as they revealed Monday that young Wolfgang picked the 25 songs which audiences will listen to in concerts during the tour.
Van Halen was formed in the early 1970s and had David Lee Roth as the first official lead singer. The band’s first album, 1978’s “Van Halen,” was successful and proved to be only the beginning. Roth recorded six albums with Van Halen before leaving in 1985.
Van Halen continued its musical career with Sammy Hagar as lead singer and enjoyed commercial success. Hagar himself left in 1996. Roth had not left the spotlight, instead turning to a solo career.
Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2007.
The forthcoming tour, beginning Sept. 27 in Charlotte, N. C., ends Dec. 11 in Calgary, Alberta. Tickets go on sale August 18.
