Upset because he was being evicted from his apartment, a man killed himself, but not before taking with him two people and wounded three others, Virginia police said Thursday. The shooter was identified by police as William T. Smith, 52.
The reason for his eviction is not clear or just wasn’t released yet, but the order of eviction sure made Smith mad. According to police records, the employees of the apartment complex went to inspect his home before he would be evicted, but they were “welcomed” by Smith with gun fire.
"At that point, the suspect started to shoot at the employees," police spokeswoman Margie Long said.
Then the SWAT team was called. The Special Weapons and Tactics crew arrived at the scene at about 7 p.m. and they began issuing orders by loudspeaker to the gunman calling on him to come out of the building.
According to some resident eye witnesses, who told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper of Norfolk what they saw and heard, between 10 to 15 shots were fired as the SWAT team went in.
Police closed most of the streets surrounding the apartment complex and told residents to stay indoors. A high school was also put under lock and the students who were taking part in after school activities were forced to remain indoors, schools spokeswoman Kathleen O'Hara told the newspaper.
