VMware unveiled this week its new Mobile Virtualization
Platform, which is based on the technology recently acquired from Trango
Virtual Processors. The company said the platform will help handset vendors
reduce development time and get mobile phones with value-added services to the
market faster.
The Mobile Virtualization Platform will be of great help for
end users as well, the company said, giving as an example running multiple
profiles, one for personal use and one for work, on the same phone. Furthermore,
MVP will be optimized to run on lower-power-consuming and memory-constrained
mobile phones.
VMware described MVP as a thin layer of software embedded on
a mobile phone, which decouples the applications and data from the underlying
hardware.
“By abstracting the applications and data from the hardware
itself, we expect that virtualization will not only enable handset vendors to
accelerate time to market, but can also pave the way for innovative
applications and services for phone users,” said Paul Maritz, president and CEO
of VMware, adding that they are looking forward to working with partners to
bring new mobile solutions faster.
The company promised great benefits for both manufacturers
and business and end users. For manufacturers, MVP will decrease the time and
effort to bring new phones to the market, allowing them to develop software
stack with an operating system and a set of applications that is not tied to
the underlying hardware.
Furthermore, for IT corporations that require employees to
have their own mobile devices, MVP will allow them to deploy a corporate phone
able to run alongside the employee’s personal phone on the same physical device.
For people on the go, smartphone-addicted users, MVP will
save their phone persona (the individuals’ collection of applications,
pictures, videos, music, email, bank info, credit card information, and more)
as a set of files, allowing all applications and data on the phone to be
managed as a collection of files.
