British comedian Russell Brand has been suspended by the BBC for a way too provocative prank call he made on October 18 on "The Russell Brand Show.” Brand and his co-host, Jonathan Ross, left a series of offensive phone messages on Andrew Sachs' answering machine and they were suspended indefinitely for it.
On one of the phone messages, Brand said that he slept with Sachs’ granddaughter, Georgina Baillie. On another one, Brand joked about the fact that Mr. Sachs’ might hang himself after hearing the bad news. Mr. Sachs is best known for playing Spanish waiter Manuel in the 1970s Britcom "Fawlty Towers."
The two hosts of "The Russell Brand Show” were suspended Wednesday (October 29). Their distasteful deeds caused denunciation in Parliament and an investigation by Britain's media regulator. The offensive prank calls have drawn more than 18,000 complaints. Among the people who expressed their disgust about the calls was also Prime Minister Gordon Brown who described them "inappropriate and unacceptable."
Both Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross have apologized to Mr. Sachs, but BBC chief Mark Thompson had had enough of it and pulled them off air.
"I am sorry that I upset Mr. Sachs," Brand told reporters, while Ross also apologized and called it a "stupid error of judgment."
Mr. Sachs’ granddaughter admitted that she had a sexual relationship with Brand. However, the 23-year-old Satanic Sluts member said Brand’s phone messages to her grandfather were cruel and out of place.
"Russell Brand has embarrassed me by making a private relationship very public in the cruelest way imaginable," said Baillie, who also called on BBC to fore the two radio show hosts.
An investigation by the Office of Communications is under way and trying to establish whether Brand and Ross breached the broadcasting code.
