Famous R&B singer Usher rehired his mother as career manager, nearly a year after he fired her due to her objection of his marriage. The 29-year-old singer dissolved his management arrangement with Benny Medina before rehiring his mother, said a representative of the singer.
Usher had hired Medina, who also manages Mariah Carey’s career, after an argument with Patton over his marriage to his longtime stylist, Tameka Foster. Usher’s mother, has managed his career since he was a teenage star.
Despite the reports of friction between Usher and his mother, the singer said that he ended the professional collaboration with Patton because he wanted her to focus on being his mother. In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Usher said that he just wanted to “take the reins of my career."
"We have a different view and mind-set. I'm doing it and I'm handling it and very happy, very happy with it," he added then.
The re-hiring of his mother as career manager comes amid struggling sales with his latest album, "Here I Stand." Although it debuted at the top of the charts when it was released in May and has resulted in a No. 1 smash with "Love in This Club," it has only sold about 948,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Compared with "Confessions," which sold about 8 million copies in the United States alone, Usher’s "Here I Stand" is very different as it reflects his recent marriage and birth of his son. The album features more ballads about relationships and commitment.
