In Copa America,
Venezuela
won its first match in 40 years. The Venezuelan team defeated Peru by 2-0 on
Saturday and moved into first place in Group A.
In the first half, Venzuela played with a man advantage for
35 minutes after the Peruvian Pedro Garcia was sent off in the 14th minute. Still
the first goal came in the second half, thanks to Alejandro Cichero header in
the 48th minute.
In the 77th minute, Venezuelan Ricardo Paez was shown a
second yellow card for shooting a goal when the referee had already disallowed
play for an offside.
Only one minute later substitute striker Daniel Arismendi
made it 2-0 for Venezuela
with a good, medium-distance shot.
"This team is focused on making history and winning
respect on the field," manager Richard Paez said.
In the other match of Group A Uruguay beat Bolivia 1-0 in
a bad quality match. The goal was scored by Vicente Sanchez in the 58th minute.
Venezuela
faces Uruguay in its final
match Tuesday in Merida.
On Sunday, Brazil will play
against Chile, after losing
its first game to Mexico.
Mexico will play against Ecuador.
