Update: MacBook Pro Can’t Use Both GPUs

This week Apple introduced its new state of the art line of laptops, which have suffered some updating, especially esthetic-wise. The MacBook and MacBook Pro are now in shiny aluminum cases that are extremely eye-catching. But there are some disappointments regarding the new laptops, especially with the new MacBook Pro, which is equipped with two Graphics Processing Units from Nvidia.

The GeForce 9600M and 9400M chips gave users the impression that for greater performance, both chips could have been used simultaneously. This couldn’t be further away from the truth, as the new MacBook Pro can only use one chip at a time and needs for the user to log out in order to change from chip to chip.

Apparently, Apple used the GPUs mostly for power management, in order for the laptop to conserve energy more efficiently. The fact that NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI/GeForce Boost technology allowes other notebooks to use both GPUs at the same time causes disappointment in Apple users, as better graphics is always something to long for. Two GPUs working together can also boost the whole system, making it immensely more powerful.

Nvidia, the designer of the chips, declared that the MacBook Pro is unable to use both GPUs at the same time because the graphic cards were built in for power conservation purposes. This inability is a hardware limitation and it can’t be fixed by software updates. The fact that the user needs to log off in order to change between GPUs seems to indeed a software issue and it could be fixed through a simple update.
