The Dreamworks animation, “Kung Fu Panda” proved to
be more popular for the moviegoers than Adam Sandler’s return in “You Don’t
Mess With the Zohan”. The fluffy Panda bear, voiced by Jack Black, has earned $60,000,000
in ticket sales, surpassing also this year’s previous record for an animation
movie held by “Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who!”
The Dreamworks animation tells the story of panda bear Po (Jack Black), who is disappointed that his aspirations
in life are limited by his work in his father’s noodle restaurant, a job that a
usual panda bear would certainly prefer to a kung fu career. But hey, our hero
is no common panda! His incredible self-confidence makes him neglect the fact
that he is fat and clumsy when he decides to become a fierce kung fu warrior.
His dream would have never come true if turtle Zen Master
Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) hadn’t anointed him, to everyone’s surprise, “The
Dragon Warrior,” a champion whose mission is to defend the valley from the
wrath of Tai Lung (Ian McShane), a dangerous snow leopard. The community is
shocked by the distracted Master’s decision, while Kung Fu master Shifu (Dustin
Hoffman), Oogway’s assistant, is totally annoyed.
Tai Lung appears to be a somewhat Luciferian figure, having
impersonated, a long time ago, Shifu’s top student and son-like figure. Tai
Lung had somehow ended up in a custom-built prison from where he managed to escape
and is now expected to bring chaos upon the peaceful community in which Po lives.
In order to fight against the terrible leopard, Shifu has
especially trained his top students, who together form “The Furious Five:
Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Viper
(Lucy Liu) and Crane (David Cross). This team is supposed to help Po defeat the dangerous enemy. This is, actually, the
message of the movie: you should believe in yourself no matter what your
limitations and weaknesses are and no matter what anybody else thinks about you.
However, “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” has also a very
good start and the movie has beat the forecasts by earning $40,000,000.
“You Don't Mess With the Zohan,” directed by Dennis Dugan
and written by Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, and Judd Apatow is a superfluous
comedy in which Sandler plays the part of Zohan, a top Israeli commando who
decides to flee his country because he wants to become a hairstylist in, you
guessed it, the land of all possibilities, America. After faking his death, Zohan
arrives in America
and finds a job as a sweeper in a hair salon in Brooklyn.
He changes his name to Scrappy Coco and, after proving his skills in the
business, he becomes a real star, attracting many clients,
Zohan aka Scrappy Coco aka Mister Funny, Relaxed at All
Times, Sex Machine aka Very Skillful Hairstylist falls in love with his
Palestinian boss, Dalia (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and finds himself in the position
to revive his old commando habits because a bunch of local Arabs recognize him
and decide to take him out.
The movie is filled with physical humor and sex jokes, while
the racial stereotyping remains present.
In its third weekend, Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull” has gained the third spot, with $22,805,000. “Indiana
Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” bears very close resemblance to what
made its “forebears” so popular and successful. It is still set in the past, in
a Nevada of
1957, it still appears to have that ineffable old fashioned style that is so
simple and in the same time, so unseen before, which becomes exquisite.
The intrigue of the movie is the eponymous crystal skull, an
artifact believed to have been left by aliens in some of their first incursions
on the Earth. So far, the movie earned $253,026,000 in the U.S.
The guys at Warner Bros. can say they did a great job when
they decided to produce ‘Sex and the City’. The HBO TV series inspired movie
did extremely well at the box-office in its second weekend with $21,310,000 in
ticket sales and earning the fourth place.
Starting off in present times, not where it left off four
years ago, the movie finds Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her three gal
pals, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis)
at crossroads.
Carrie is engaged to Mr. Big and planning a major New York wedding.
Miranda is trying to work out a balance between her family life and career.
Samantha relocated to Los Angeles to be with
Smith, her boy toy, who became a TV star in the meantime, while Charlotte is happily
married to Harry and the mother of their adopted daughter Lily. The "Sex
and the City" movie had a $65 million budget and is written and directed
by Michael Patrick King. It runs 135 minutes and is distributed by New Line
Cinema and HBO Films.
The fifth sport went to “The Strangers”, a horror movie released
last week. The movie, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, tells the story of
a couple, Kristen and James, who is heading to the vacation home of James’
family, located deep into the dark, scary woods. They seem to take the trip in
order to refresh or repair their relationship. Once they arrive at the house,
they have to put on hold their one on one quality time, as three masked
killers, including a woman, begin to hunt them down. This weekend the movie
earned $9,289,000, bringing its total gross to $37,646,000.
“Iron Man” is still an attraction for the moviegoers and made
it into Top 10 with $7,522,000.
Enjoying many favorable reviews, the movie boosted the
career of Robert Downey Jr., who plays the role of Tony Stark, a billionaire
weapons manufacturer who turns himself into a superhero, after being kidnapped
by terrorists in Afghanistan.
The movie earned $288,893,000 since its release more than one month ago.
“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" has failed
two position, from fifth to seventh spot and earned $5,527,000 this weekend,
bringing the total gross to $125,846,000, under its $200 million budget.
In this second movie about Narnia, the Telemarine Prince
Caspian (Ben Barnes) is wakened by his mentor, Doctor Cornelius (Vincent
Grass), who warns him that his life is endangered by his uncle’s malefic plans.
Miraz (Sergio Castellitto), who is a usurper that killed his own brother,
intended to make Caspian his heir, but only until he had his own child.
The four Pevensie children Peter (William Moseley), Susan
(Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley) will
journey back in their fantasy world to help the good prince in his fight
against his evil uncle.
“What Happens in Vegas,” starring Cameron Diaz, Ashton
Kutcher, Rob Corddry, Lake Bell
and Dennis Farina, had another good weekend with $3,400,000 in ticket sales. Written
by Dana Fox and directed by Tom Vaughan, the 99-minute-Tong comedy shares the
story of two people who discover they’ve gotten married following a night of
debauchery in Vegas, with one of them winning a jackpot after playing the
other’s quarter. The pair tries to undermine each other and get their hands on
the money, but they fall in love along the way.
The last two movies in Top 10 were “Baby Mama” with $779,000
and “Made Of Honor” with $775,000.
In “Baby Mama,” Tina Fey plays a career woman who feels that
her biological clock ceased ticking subtly and is on the verge of ringing.
Directed by Paul Weiland, and co-written by debutant Adam
Sztykiel and Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, “Made of Honor” is a romantic
comedy that did not receive too many favorable reviews. It tells the story of
Tom (Patrick Dempsey) and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), who are best friends
until Hannah gets engaged and Tom realizes he is madly in love with her. The
movie borrowed elements from several romantic movies and, despite its funny
moments, it was considered too predictable.
