Hanging upside down over New York’s
Central Park may offer a stunning view, but it’s
just not what the doctor ordered.
U.S.
illusionist David Blaine, however, does not seem to care. The 35-year-old stuntman and showman began the 60-hour trial
on Monday morning at 8:30 and, by midafternoon, he said he was trying to hang
on.
“My mouth is dry and I have to go to the bathroom,” he said,
according to The New York Daily News. “I feel pressure in my head, and my legs
are tingling,” the magician added.
David Blaine will reach the ground and get on his feet
(hopefully) at 11 p.m. on Wednesday. This is quite a challenge, if you ask me.
The stuntman will drink just fluids during the almost 3-day
event and will eat nothing. In addition to this, he cannot even take a nap, as
he has to be awake permanently in order to move his legs and keep the blood
flowing.
Dr. Massimo Napolitano, a vascular surgeon who is also a
member of the team that supervises David Blaine, said that the Brooklyn-born
showman was risking his own life.
“The biggest risk is the pooling of blood in the veins of
the head and the eyes and that can cause bleeding in the brain, bleeding on the
eye, and stroke and blindness,” the surgeon said, as reported by The New York
Daily News.
Furthermore, the doctor said that the signs of blindness Blaine might suffer include
blurred vision, persistent headaches, passing out and seizures.
David Blaine’s previous stunts consist of spending 3 days
covered in ice, a week underwater and 44 days without food in a glass box.
Earlier this year, David Blaine broke the world record for
breath-holding after resisting under water for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, live
on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
