Amy Winehouse, though frail, has proven fearless before, with fans, critics, paparazzi and the world in general. Mistakes? She’s not afraid of those either, as shown over the weekend during the Glastonbury Festival, where she apparently hit a fan.
The 24-year-old singer performed several of her hits in front of some 80,000 fans at the Glastonbury Festival on Saturday, lovingly mentioned her incarcerated husband once more and was not afraid to throw a punch at a festivalgoer who reportedly tried to grab her.
While a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said no complaints of assault were received following Winehouse’s apparent punch, meaning no investigation would ensue, the BBC now has more details concerning the incident.
The supposed victim, 25-year-old James Gostelow, from London, explained that the alleged grabbing or attacking of Winehouse was a misunderstanding.
She performed on the Pyramid Stage and later climbed down to the pit in front of the stage in order to meet and greet fans. It was there that a small and for a while mysterious scuffle occurred, where she was supposedly grabbed by a fan and she threw a punch at him in what appeared to be self-defense.
Gostelow told the BBC that while Winehouse was in the crowd of people, someone from behind him threw a hat which hit her beehive. Looking around for the culprit, her eyes fell on Gostelow and she elbowed him.
No bad feeling on Gostelow’s part however, as he serenely said that it was all part of the “Glastonbury experience.”
“I’m just pleased I got to see her. She did a great act,” the young man humorously added. “Not everyone can say they have been hit by Amy Winehouse. I just want to shake the person who threw the hat.”
Winehouse may have had a rough year to live through, what with repeated attempts at entering (and remaining) in a rehabilitation facility, the paparazzi’s fascination for her personal life and their subsequent following her around and having her husband incarcerated.
Add to this police investigations into her reported drug use or into previous physical attacks, her failing health and her recent hospitalization and one would not be surprised if Winehouse decided to take time off for a while.
The 24-year-old was recently diagnosed with emphysema but nevertheless performed quite satisfactorily before tens of thousands of people, along names such as Jay-Z, Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen and The Verve at Glastonbury.
Moreover, Friday she appeared during a concert in Hyde Park in London to celebrate the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela.
