Update: Actor Morgan Freeman Recovering Well After Surgery

The latest news on Morgan Freeman's condition following Sunday's car accident, are good: the actor is "doing well" after undergoing surgery to have his nerves reconnected and damage repaired in his left arm and hand, People.com reported.

According to "The Dark Knight" star's publicist, Donna Lee, Freeman, who was airlifted from the scene of the accident in Mississippi's Tallahatchie County, to a hospital in Memphis, was in surgery for four hours and is "doing well."

"The surgery last night lasted four and a half hours. He's visiting with family this morning. As of this morning he's up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days," the statement added.

News broke out on Sunday that Morgan Freeman was involved in a one-car accident in Mississippi in which he and a female passenger had to be cut out of the car with the jaws of life. The accident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when Freeman lost control of the wheel and the car, a 1997 Nissan belonging to a female friend, careened off the highway and overturned twice before landing upright in a ditch.

Rescuers at the scene reportedly said the actor was conscious and talking when the emergency team arrived. Moreover, Freeman was actually cracking jokes telling people trying to take photos "No freebies! No freebies!"

"He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point," said Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, who arrived at the accident scene after it happened. Every panel on the car, which had landed right-side up, was damaged. The airbag had not deployed.

The 71-year-old actor was rushed in "serious" condition to a hospital 100 miles from the scene. His rep said the actor suffered a "broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage but he is in good spirits," and was looking forward to a full recovery.
According to a friend and business partner of Freeman's quoted by The Guardian, the actor has also been sitting up and talking in the hospital.

No drugs or alcohol are thought to be involved in the accident and both Freeman and the female passenger, identified as Demaris Meyer of Memphis, were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said.

Despite initial reports that Freeman might have fallen asleep at the wheel, it’s now being speculated that heavy rain caused the accident.

One of Hollywood's most famous and beloved stars, Morgan Freeman starred in nearly 100 feature films and television programs, and won an Academy Award for best supporting actor in 2005 for his role in the gritty boxing film "Million Dollar Baby." He has been nominated for Oscars three other times, for the movies "Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Shawshank Redemption."
