He may have been acquitted of murder in the 1995 “Trial of
the Century,” but he was found guilty on a dozen charges this time.
Thirteen years after being controversially cleared of the
slayings of his ex wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman,
former football star O.J. Simpson was convicted on all charges in the much
talked about Las Vegas kidnapping and robbery case on Friday.
The Hall of Fame NFL star may actually spend the rest of his
life behind bars, as sentencing was scheduled for December 5.
Looking exhausted and serious, O.J. Simpson sighed deeply as
the clerk in Clark County District Court read all the charges. Simpson was
immediately jailed.
The 61-year-old ex athlete, as well as co-defendant Clarence
“C.J.” Stewart, were convincted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other
charges for teaming up with other men approximately a year ago so as to raid a
room of a hotel-casino and take several items, incuding game balls, photographs
and plaques. According to prosecutors, two of the men who accompanied Simpson
carried guns and, in addition to this, one of them testified that it was the
former football star who asked him to bring the weapon.
While O.J. Simpson did not reveal much emotion as he was
being handcuffed by officers, his sister, Carmelita Durio, shed a few tears on
the shoulder of one of her brother’s friends, Tom Scotto, who uttered the words
“I love you” as Simpson was being walked out of the courtroom.
Members of the jury avoided to look the defendants in the
eye when they arrived in the courtroom. Moroever, they refused to answer any
questions after the verdict was read.
O.J. Simpson’s legal representative, Yale Galanter, said
that he would appeal the conviction, which came as a result of approximately 13
hours of deliberation by the nine women and three men in the jury.
Although Judge Jackie Glass did not offer any comment upon
the verdict, she did thank the jurors for their services and rejected all motions
regarding the defendants’ bail release.
The defense claimed throughout the trial that Simpson did
not plan a robbery and that all he intended to do was to retrieve personal
belongings which had been stolen from him. Furthermore, Simpson’s lawyers said
that their client did not ask his friends to bring guns and that he had no idea
that they were carrying weapons during the confrontation.
Simpson may face from five years to life imprisonment for
the kidnapping charges and from two to 30 years behind bars for armed robbery.
May have O.J. Simpson’s past deeds affect the current trial?
Well, everybody has expressed concern over this matter, as many people have
been strongly disturbed by the fact that the former football player was
acquitted of the double murder. During jury selection, Simpson’s legal
representatives said they feared that others would see the case as an
opportunity to punish Simpson for what he had been cleared years before.
Although the judge requested all jurors to put Simpson’s
past behind, the defendant’s attorneys still doubt the accuracy of yesterday’s
verdict.
Update: On Saturday Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, said he was
happy with the verdict. "We're absolutely thrilled to see that the potential is that he could
spend the rest of his life in jail," Goldman told CNN. "Right now,
there is not much more to say other than we're going to wait to find out what
else happens."
Simpson's attorney Yale Galanter had argued before the jury
that his client was simply retrieving memorabilia that had been unlawfully
taken from him. Galanter spoke with Simpson after the verdict and described him as
"extremely upset, extremely emotional." He is to file a motion for a
new trial and appeal the case.
