After Team Dev released a program called “yellowsn0w” which helped users to unlock their iPhones from AT&T’s network, forum boards have been filling with complaints from people who wrecked their devices after they had tried to unlock them, while others stated that the step-by-step instructions did not work. Moreover, things are getting even more confusing, as different instructions are being posted on the web every day.
The initial guide into unlocking the iPhone stated that, first, the user has to update their iPhones and download version 2.2 of iPhone’s firmware. The firmware is available through iTunes, by clicking the Update button. Next, the user will have to download Quickpwn. Before launching Quickpwn, users should backup all their program data and settings, along with their contacts and messages.
In order to launch Quickpwn, the user has to connect their iPhone to the computer through an USB port. After that, they will have to download Cydia or Installer, which is the platform that unlocks the iPhone. The user will have to insert an application repository prior to launching yellowsn0w.
Last, the AT&T SIM card has to be replaced with the new one. Switching the SIM card is not an easy job and requires a paper clip and instructions found on the Internet. Users are advised to disable PINs from their SIM card before making the switch.
Still, other users on forums or even YouTube offered somewhat different instructions. Some of them say that turning on “Airplane Mode” is a necessary step prior to setting the iPhone to search for your wireless carrier. Others reported that the user must download Mobileterminal, a program that will provide the deployment of yellowsn0w.
