“Stargate” fans, don’t despair! The Sci Fi Channel has
announced that it is planning to release the third series of the popular
franchise.
In spite of the fact that the network said last week that
“Stargate: Atlantis” would not be revived, it nevertheless gave the green light
to yet another sequel, “Stargate: Universe,” due for release next year.
Sci Fi’s longest-running original series franchise has been
broadcast in different embodiments for more than a decade.
“There’s an appetite for space opera as ‘Battlestar’ goes
away,” Sci Fi President Dave Howe said. “This is an opportunity to reinvent
this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation,” he added, according
to the New York Daily News.
“Stargate: Universe” will initially debut as a two-hour
movie early next year to subsequently slide into a regular weekly series. It
will depict a team of explorers who discover an ancient starship dubbed the
Destiny, which had been launched hundreds or thousands of years ago. However,
they swiftly find that they cannot return to Earth and that they have no other
choice than to spend the rest of their lives in the faraway universe.
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who also created
“Stargate: SG-1” and “Stargate: Atlantis,” will be the executive producers and
writers of the fresh series. They explained that “Universe” will maintain the
well-known adventurous and humorous spirit of the successful franchise, while
“breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate
explorers, thrust together and far from home.”
In addition to this, Sci Fi also announced an order for an
“Atlantis” movie as a replacement for a sixth-season order.
“SG-1” was aired for 10 seasons, at first on Showtime and afterward
on Sci Fi, beginning with its sixth season. Moreover, “Atlantis” debuted four
years ago and will mark its 100th episode this year.
