A huge blaze broke out on a lot at Universal Studios this morning alerting over 100 firefighters currently trying to stop the fire, which already destroyed a building and threatened the studio's film vault.
According to Los Angeles fire Capt. Frank Reynoso, the fire started at around 5 a.m. Sunday morning on a sound stage on a back lot. Though the cause for the fire hasn't yet been identified, Reynoso said it is possible that filming might have been going on at the time and at least one explosion occurred. One fireman was injured, but his condition is currently unknown while scores of firefighters and helicopters are battling the flames, E!Online reported.
Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Daryl Jacobs told Times Online that at least one building had burned and as many as three blocks of movie facades were destroyed, including two mock New York and New England streets.
"The facades are constructed of heavy timber and they tend to burn quite freely," he said.
According to the latest updates, the fire has been contained to four or five buildings on the back lot, Captain Brown from the LAFD said, adding that there were some explosions caused by propane tanks stored in the buildings.
Located north of downtown Los Angeles, mostly within Los Angeles County, the Universal Studios theme park, offers visitors the chance to see sets from films such as "Psycho" and Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" as well as television shows like "Desperate Housewives" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
A spokesman for Universal Studios said earlier that the park would open Sunday, though the studio tour would be affected by the blaze. He provided no further details about the fire.
