Completing a studio acquisition deal that was being prepared for months, Relativity pictures led by CEO Ryan Kavanaugh bought Rogue Pictures’ 25 movie titles, four upcoming films, and upwards of several projects in development. Rogue’s producing deals have also been acquired, among them those with Wes Craven’s Midnight Entertainment and Intrepid pictures. The deal is rounded off with a ready-made distribution pipeline, as Universal handles most of Rogue’s releases worldwide.
Rogue Pictures began in 2004 as a division of Universal Pictures’ focus Features, and generally made lower-budget films. In 2007 it became an independent specialty unit of its siring studio. While the precise terms of the acquisition deal have not been disclosed, they are believed to be somewhere around the figure of $150 million. Details related to the deal were first released in October of last year.
The first title which will be released under the new “regime” is The Unborn, headed by David S. Goyer as both writer and director, and with Michael Bay and his company Platinum Dunes handling production. The movie, a supernatural-themed horror flick, will open on Friday. Platinum Dunes was one of the companies who had a partnership with Rogue, but chose not to be a part of the new deal from now on.
Relativity intends to release the three other in-progress films that Rogue is brewing, including Wes Craven’s 25/8. All three films are currently in post-production. Afterwards, the studio intends to release at least two films per year. These could include projects already in early development by Rogue, or newly acquired projects. Universal could even release some of the existing non-Rogue Relativity projects.
Tucker Tooley, Relativity’s president of production, will oversee future productions along with his team. Since the deal was first publicized in October, Andrew Rona, Rogue’s former co-president has moved on to Silver Pictures, where he is president of the studio owned by Warner Bros.
The current deal only serves to strengthen an already strong partnership between Universal and Relativity Media, which essentially functions as media and entertainment group whose business is to finance a slate of films at Universal as well as Sony Corporation. Last fall, the companies drew up an equity deal, which will see Relativity fund a sizeable portion of Universal’s slate up until 2015.
Kavanaugh is particularly thrilled about Rogue’s success with horror films. In a statement he is quoted as saying that Rogue is a brand that is recognized worldwide, and their success in the realm of horror and thriller films is something that relativity can draw and expand upon. The latest hit to thrill our hearts from Rogue was The Strangers, which despite of its low budget, grossed some $53 million domestically at the box office.
