As medicine, technology and science advance at a very fast rate, medical breakthroughs now happen quite often. The advances are quite stunning if you consider that in our day and age, functional transplants are possible. You can have a new heart if your old one isn’t working well. Kidneys are viable for transplant in certain types of diabetes. Hair transplants are possible and they help boost men’s confidence when baldness takes its toll on them. Limbs can be transplanted after injuries or accidents.
Despite these achievements, the United States healthcare system has been in decline for several years. Reforming the health care system was actually one of the most important aspects in the 2008 presidential career. Having a strong opinion about reforming Medicare, Medicaid and many other aspects have been crucial to Obama’s campaign, and has probably accounted for a large portion of the votes cast in his favor.
One Wednesday, the health insurance industry issued a statement. In that statement, they declared that they are now willing to accept any type of customer, irrespective of their diseases or disabilities. However, their support is conditioned – the health insurance industry will accept all, only if Congress decides to make it compulsory for any United States citizen to have health care coverage.
On another note, both America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association openly stated that they support the prospective policy of granting health insurance to those with pre-existing conditions.
Obama must be careful when handling the health care issue, as Bill Clinton’s plan for universal health coverage was exterminated in 1994.
