A person familiar with the discussions has said that the two CEOs, Glenn Tilton of United Airlines and Doug Parker of US Airways, have decided to suspend the merger of the two companies for now.
The main reasons for this decision are both the fact that the companies will have to find funds to finance the integration that comes after the merger, and the fact that UAL is supposedly about to close a deal with Continental. In addition to these, workers at both companies do not seem very attracted to the merger, all of them feeling that the deal could be bad for them one way or another.
The main reason for which some airlines in the US are starting to consider merging with others is the fact that during the last several years they have seen more competition from their European counterparts. What is more, mergers could help airlines get over the oil price crisis easier.
Another two big companies, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp., announced in April that they will merge, thus creating the world’s largest airline.
US Airways and United Airlines have been negotiating the deal for two month. At the same time, United was doing the same thing with Continental. In April, Continental has announced that it doesn’t want a full merger with United, at which point the talks with US Airways have intensified, but all came to a stop on Thursday.
United is going through a rough period of time right now. In the first quarter of the year, it had losses hat amounted to $537 million, but the company still has hopes in a brighter future.
