A 6 to 7 months-old girl was
abandoned on the back seat of a livery cab in Queens Thursday morning by a man,
who is being looked for by the police.
The livery driver, Klever
Sailema, 45, an Ecuadorian immigrant, took the baby girl to a firehouse. She
was subsequently taken to St. John’s Hospital in Queens
where she is being taken care of. According to Dr. Kenneth Berry of the
hospital emergency department, she is “in good condition-excellent condition. She
appeared to be well-cared-for.”
The baby and her parents have not
been identified yet. The authorities are trying to determine whether the man
who abandoned her was a relative.
The livery driver said that he
picked up the man and the girl Thursday before 10 a.m., at the corner of Northern Blvd and 106th St. in Corona. The man said he
wanted to go to Manhattan,
Sailema informs. When reaching Northern
Blvd. and 83rd St. the man asked the driver to pull
over, as he wanted to make a call from a pay phone. He got out of the car,
crossed the street, walked to the phone, and then ran away.
The driver realized that the man
left the baby girl on the back seat of the livery cab. She had been left with
a bag of baby food and clothes. The driver took the girl to the nearest
firehouse, Engine 289 on 43rd Ave., New York
Daily News reports.
The girl was than taken to St. John’s Hospital
in Queens. The baby, named “Lourdes” by the medical staff, will be in the
care of the Administration of Children’s Services, until she is placed in a
foster family. In New York State a parent is allowed to leave a newborn in a
safe place such as a firehouse or a hospital without facing charges of
abandonment, but only if the baby is left within five days of birth, the New
York Times reports.
