Unexpected: Project Runway Wins Peabody Award

One Peabody award for excellence in radio and television broadcasting went to an unexpected recipient Wednesday, that is “Project Runway,” which now becomes the first reality television series to ever win the prestigious prize.

The big surprise winner Wednesday was not Showtime’s series about a serial killer/forensic scientist, “Dexter,” but Bravo’s reality television series “Project Runway,” where German supermodel Heidi Klum is host and judge, as well as an executive producer for the show.

Among the 35 winners of 2007 were NBC’s satire on sketch comedy shows “30 Rock,” political news satire “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, new drama series “Mad Men” on AMC, about the advertising world of the early 1960s, and “Planet Earth,” reports Reuters.

The 67th annual Peabody Awards winners were chosen by the Peabody board and announced by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. A ceremony will follow at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on June 16.

“The range of genres, the variety of topics and the consistently high quality of submissions for Peabody consideration indicated again that amazing work is being done in electronic media,” Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards, said in a press release.

“The Peabody Board labored through many hours of discussion and deliberation to select these works from among more than 1,000 outstanding entries.”

Documentaries recognized included “Wounds of War – The Long Road Home for Our Nation’s Veterans,” a series of reports by ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, “A Journey Across Afghanistan: Opium and Roses,” from Bulgaria`s Balkan News Corporation, and “Whole Lotta Shakin,” the Texas Heritage Music Foundation’s public -radio series chronicling the rockabilly music of the 1950s.

Spanish language “Univision's Ya Es Hora” (“The Time is Now”) won for a public-service campaign that taught legal aliens how to apply for U.S. citizenship.
