The health care system has long been subject to extensive criticism. One of the main campaigning tools for the two presidential candidates, for instance, was a complete reformation of the health care system. Recently, it has been discovered that federal health care system Medicaid covers a series of perilous drugs that have not yet been tested in regards to their safety or efficiency in treating the affections they were designed for.
These types of drugs have cost the American people $200 million since 2004. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that these prescription rugs, which are unapproved, are a hazard to public health, and have even been known to lead to death in some cases. Except for those insured my Medicaid, a study has shown that private patients are also taking them. The fact that these medications are available make people think that they are also tested and approved by the FDA, which is certainly how things should run.
More than 100 unapproved drugs have been prescribed between 2004 and 2007, for almost $200 million, and it has been proven that such drugs are still on the open market today. According to the FDA, however, it is suspected that thousands of such drugs are being currently prescribed in the United States.
Officials from Medicaid said that they are aware of the problem, but it is the Congress who can help them fix the problem. The FDA first has to assemble a complete list of all the drugs that are available, but haven’t been approved by then. Until such a list will be made, Medicaid keeps paying for the drugs.
