'Ugly Betty' To Be Shot In New York

ABC's dramedy "Ugly Betty" will soon be moving its production to New York City where the series' action is taking place, ABC Studios said on Monday.

According to an announcement made today by Governor David Paterson, ABC Studios President Mark Pedowitz and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the show will start shooting in the Big Apple in June, when production for the third season begins.

The move comes one month after Governor Paterson announced the expansion of the New York State Film Production Credit during the opening of the seventh annual Tribeca Film Festival. The newly-expanded tax credit program tripled the amount of qualified film production costs eligible for the credit, extending the program to 2013.

"Ugly Betty" is the first show to benefit from the move, which is expected to create more than 200 full and part-time jobs, while the city is hoping that more productions will follow.

"While there's no better backdrop than New York City for virtually any television show, a show about a young woman from Queens whose job combines publishing and fashion was made to be 'Made in New York.' Film and TV production contribute $5 billion per year to New York City's economy. I want to thank ABC for their growing commitment to New York City, congratulate Governor Paterson, and thank City Film Commissioner Katherine Oliver for traveling to Los Angeles to help seal the deal," Daily News quoted Bloomberg as saying.

Other shows currently filming in New York include "Law & Order,'' made by NBC Universal, CW network's "Gossip Girl'' and "30 Rock."

"New York City is one of the most desired filming locations in the country and we are pleased to welcome 'Ugly Betty' into that storied history," Governor Patterson said. "With this hit show set to film in Manhattan and Queens, this will allow viewers to see more of our great city."

However, over 300 furious crewmembers on the sitcom protested the loss of hundreds of jobs, caused the upcoming transfer to New York.
