Beijing - Muna Lee kickstarted an American 200 metres revenge mission while there was injury heartbreak for Indian long jump hope Anju Bubba George on Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics.
Beaten comprehensively in the women's 100m in a Jamaican medal sweep, Lee gave the US team a boost by dominating the 200m heats in 22.71 seconds. World champion Allyson Felix also progressed by winning her heat in 23.02 seconds.
But Jamaica boasts the top three times of the year from 100m world champion Veronica Campbell (21.94), and joint 100m Olympic silver medallists Kerron Stewart (21.99) and Sherone Simpson (22.11). All three also went through into the second round.
"I feel confident. I just wanted to come out and as little effort (as possible) to win," said Felix, who didn't run in the 100m. "I have been sitting around and watching everyone else. So it is nice to get going."
The US also dominated long jump qualifying from Brittney Reese's 6.87m leap, with world and Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva also into the final with 6.70m.
The same distance was scored by Swedish star Carolina Kluft, who has "no regrets" about giving up the heptathlon which she dominated 2002-2007.
"I was tired physically and mentally. So I made a decision," Kluft told Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa. Kluft said she didn't even really watch the Olympic heptathlon as she saw the long jump as "a new challenge".
Others were not so lucky, with 7.12m season leader Naide Gomes of Portugal crashing out on 6.29m and Russian ace Tatyana Kotova also out on 6.57m.
"I lacked confidence, i didn't adjust to the competition. Other girls performed very well so I felt pressure," Gomes said.
But the biggest heartbreak came for the 2003 world championship bronze medallist Bobby Goerge as she managed no measured jump after a freak injury in her right foot.
"It happened on the last trial jump. I felt pain inside the (foot) compartment," she said. "I was doing really well. I was in great shape."
The only other event in a quiet morning session was women's javelin qualifying with Czech reigning world champion Barbora Spotakova leading the way with 67.69m from German rivals Christina Obergfoell and Steffi Nerius.
Tuesday evening's medal events are the men's 1,500m, high jump, discus throw and the women's 400m and 100m hurdles final.
