The U.S. Supreme Court has to decide today whether the ban
on handguns is constitutional or not. District
officials say that the Supreme Court has to decide if the Washington DC’s
ban on handguns respects the Constitution.
According to BBC, the ban is
32-year-old and the Supreme Court is to tell if the Second Amendment protects
an person’s right to possess a gun or if it gives the state the right to
organize armed militias.
While DC city council
said that the ban is necessary in order to keep under control violence, Dick
Heller, a security guard, challenged the ban, saying he should have the right
to possess a gun for his self-protection. In March, a federal appeals court
said Heller was right and the Second Amendment protected an individual’s right
to own a gun, making the DC ban unconstitutional.
The city took the case to the Supreme Court and it remained to
see what the decision would be.
The opinions are divided as there are groups who agree with
the ban and others who say the ban should be removed. In case the Supreme Court
upholds the ban, it is possible that other gun laws in other parts of the U.S. would
be challenged.
A survey has showed that there are 90 guns for every 100
citizens, but there are persons who own more than one gun and others who own
none.
