The rising star of US national football team Freddy Adu is ready to make the big step to a titled football club in Europe, Benfica Lisbon.
The Portuguese club announced that is ready to enlist 18-year-old Adu if he passes some medical tests, in a bid swiveling around 2 million euros.
A promising player, Adu shone at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, where he scored a hat-trick against Poland in a group stage match. He managed to net-in 12 balls in the Major League Soccer so far, scoring only one goal for his latest team Real Salt Lake which he joined this year.
Many top European teams had their sights on the Ghana-born striker, but it seems Benfica moved faster and netted a player that is used with the spotlight. Adu had a salary of 500,000 dollars per year in the MLS, a confidence-giving wager for a 18-year-old who signed his first professional contract at the age of 14 with D.C. United.
Pending a successful medical examination, the player will join Benfica’s squad which is currently preparing to tackle another season of the UEFA Champions League, following to play in the third qualifying round after finishing third in the Liga.
