World current top tennis players, Roger Federer and Justine Henin, rose to the expectations on Monday in their opening matches.
In his attempt to become the first tennis player in the Open era to win this Grand Slam title four years in a row, Federer was in top form right from the coin toss as he won the serve and held it to oust Scoville Jenkins, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
"Maybe other guys like five-setters in the first round. I like straight sets more," Federer said.
Justine Henin also began the journey to her seventh Slam title with an easy win in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 over Germany’s Julia Goerges. The Belgian made only 44 percent of her first serves and also committed seven double-faults, but despite those uncharacteristic mistakes she won every game she served.
The world’s number one Belgian is ignoring the eight time Grand Slam champion lurking in her quarter of the US Open bracket, but she might pay for refusing to see revenge hungry Serena Williams as another S. Williams/ Henin showdown is possible and very likely to take place in the final eight at Flushing Meadows.
In other tournament openers John Isner and Wimbledon junior champion Donald Young confirmed the fact that they are America’s big hopes for the future. Isner debuted at the Grand Slam by hitting 34 aces as he eliminated 26th-seeded Jarkko Nieminen, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4.
