An alleged member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards has been detained Thursday by coalition troops in northern Iraq, the US military said.
According to a statement released by the army, the man was seized in the Kurdish city of Sulaymaniyah and is believed to be a member of the al-Quds Force, a special unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
He is allegedly smuggling “improvised explosive devices” and is also responsible for training “foreign terrorists” after helping them to cross the border in Iraq, the same statement informed.
Reportedly, two Iranians were arrested by US soldiers in the same city of Sulaymaniyah located in the Kurdish Autonomous Region, but a link between the two operations has not been confirmed yet.
Reports said two Iranian nationals part of a commercial delegation were detained by US forces at a hotel in the northern town early Thursday.
A security official said about 20 US troopers arrived at the Sulaymaniyah Palace hotel in civilian vehicles in the morning hours and arrested the two Iranians, without giving an explanation.
The same official said the Iranian delegation was invited by the city’s governor, adding that regional authorities have no knowledge of the operation. The US military did not comment on this event, no statement being released so far.
Iran has been accused numerous times by US officials for supporting extremists fighting security forces in Iraq and interfering in the country’s internal affairs. Several Iraqi political factions are believed to have connections with Iran.
