US-Led Coalition Forces Detaine 10 Ansar-al-Sunna Militants

The US-led coalition forces in Iraq arrested Tuesday 10 suspected Sunni militants during morning raids targeting the Ansar al-Sunna and al-Qaeda in Iraq networks.

Security forces said tha, while raiding Mosul, they arrested what was believed to be a senior leader in the Ansar al-Sunna group. According to their statement, he "provides weapons, documentation and financial support for the group's criminal activities”.

In another raid in Fallujah, 70 km west of Baghdad, the US-led forces arrested six more suspects allegedly in al-Anbar province. In Taji, they arrested three.

The group known as the Army of Ansar al-Sunna is a Sunni insurgency group which has claimed responsibility for suicide bombings and kidnappings in Iraq. The group is believed to have connections with the al-Qaeda network.

“The information we gain from these successful operations leads us one step closer to dismantling terrorist networks in Iraq and helping the Iraqi people,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a military spokesman.

Meanwhile, at least five Iraqis were killed and 15 others were injured as two explosive devices were detonated in the Bab al-Sharqi region of central Baghdad, Voices of Iraq news agency said Tuesday.

In an unrelated incident, 14 Iraqis were reported kidnapped from the Kirkuk area in northern Iraq Tuesday, local police sources said. According to police officer Abbas Mohamed, an armed group posing as Iraqi soldiers set up a fake checkpoint and kidnapped five civilians, four of which were Shiite Turkmen, on their way back from Tikrit to Kirkuk.
In a separate incident, a group of gunmen captured nine employees working in an oil refinery in the town of Bayji, west of Kirkuk.

Also on Tuesday, Voices of Iraq reported that 91 unidentified bodies were found buried in a cemetery in southern Karbala, 100 km south of the capital. According to a source, the bodies have been taken from a morgue in Baghdad.
