US: Hearst’s Former Mansion Goes On Sale For 165 Million Dollars

According to Los Angeles Times, the most expensive mansion in the US has gone on sale. "The Beverly House Compound," the 1920s-era mansion formerly belonged to legendary media magnate William Randolph Hearst. The price announced by Westside Estate Agency is $165 million.

The house was originally built for Milton Getz of Union Bank and Trust in the late 1920's, and the grounds were designed by German architect, Paul Thiene. The media mogul Randolph Hearst bought the property in 1947, paying about 120,000 dollars, and died there in 1951.

The compound is placed 2 km north of Sunset Boulevard in an area known as The Platinum Triangle where neighbours include Tom Cruise and his actress wife, Katie Holmes, Amazon.com Chief Executive Jeff Bezos and David and Victoria Beckham.

Spanning almost 6 1/2 acres, the palatial estate has been owned by the current owner, financier Leonard Ross, for 31 years, and offers an estimated 72,000 square feet of living space under roof with 29 bedrooms throughout the four separate homes, one apartment and a security cottage, on the property. Believed to be the only compound of this size left in Beverly Hills, the main house features a two-story library, living room with a 22 foot arched ceilings and fireplaces and statuary brought from the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA.

"The Beverly House Compound," was the house where former US President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier spent part of their honeymoon and it has also a rich Hollywood history. The mansion appears in a several scenes from “The Godfather” and later it was used for filming the movie “The Bodyguard” with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

Currently the record price for a US home is the 94 million dollars paid by former telecom mogul Gary Winnick for a Bel-Air estate in 2001.
