UPDATE: Woman, 4 Children Killed in Iowa City

Investigators hope to find out more clues that could help them solve the case of the five people found dead inside a house located on Iowa City's east side. The house belongs to Steven Sueppel, former vice president and controller for the Hills Bank & Trust bank, who was indicted for embezzlement and money laundering.

The autopsies are scheduled for today.

The investigation also includes a sixth person who died in a crash with the family’s van on Interstate 80. Unfortunately, the van caught fire and the person driving it couldn’t be identified. Investigators suspect the driver was Steven Sueppel, husband of the woman found dead in the Iowa house.

According to court records, Sueppel was indicted on federal charges Feb. 12 for embezzlement and money laundering in connection with almost $560,000 missing from the bank where he was working. The 42-year-old pleaded not guilty.
Sueppel had “a separate account at another bank that he would deposit stolen monies into” according to Johnson County Sheriff's Detective Doug Gwinn.

Police weren’t sure about the way the five people were killed, but according to media reports they had been shot.

Several warnings had been issued across the city. The University of Iowa was warned through text and telephone that there is an active shooter in town, while public schools were shut down as a precaution.

Sueppel, a man in his 40s as the police described him, is sought by investigators in connection with the killing of the four children and his wife, Sheryl.
