The United Nations Security Council announced that it made planes for a meeting which will take place later on Sunday in order to set the rules for the future debate on Myanmar following the return of UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari, who finished discussions with the military authorities and political leaders in the capital Yangon.
During the meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon, the council’s aim will be to set the time and format of the debate. The debate will take place on Friday and besides the representatives of the 15-nations of the council envoy Ibrahim Gambari will also attend the meeting to report his conclusions o the matter and the discussions he had with Myanmar political and military leaders.
Gambari is set to arrive in New York Thursday, where he will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as soon as possible.
The envoy’s visit to the capital of the troubled nation of Myanmar lasted from Saturday to Tuesday and followed the street violence resulted from the military government’s crack downs on the pro-democracy demonstrators led by the local-revered Buddhist monks.
The Friday meeting has been called by US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, on behalf of the United States, in order to take account of Gambari's findings.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he talked with Gambari before his departure and that he asked the envoy to send "the strongest possible message" to the political and military leaders of the Asian country, including the need to exercise restraint in the face of the popular demonstration despite threats of military repression.
Asked about Gambari's visit and if it was a successful one, UN Secretary General Ban said:
"You cannot call it ... a success. We are doing what we must, and I was relatively relieved that he was first of all able to meet with leaders of Myanmar government as well as Madame Aung San Suu Kyi."
According to Ban’s sayings, Gambari will make another trip to Myanmar in November as its military leaders assured the envoy of their agreement on the matter.
