U.N. Peacemakers and Workers Accused of Child Abuse

Save the Children UK, a British charity organization, reported that United Nations peacekeepers and international aid workers have been sexually exploiting children.

According to The New York Times, some of the children were 6 years old. What kind of world is one where peacemakers take advantage of children? They come to them for help and they end up in a worse situation.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said Tuesday that they will open an investigation to see if these allegations are true.

The report from the charity organization said that the children were mostly from Haiti, the Ivory Coast and South Sudan.

According to the Seattle Times, if the children didn’t agree to perform sexual favors, they would not be allowed to have food. Other children were forced to have sex or to be filmed and others had to kiss or touch in a sexual manner.

Apparently, about 250 children between 10 and 17 were interviewed, but the report said that, because few victims reported the abuse, it was impossible to know the dimensions of the situation.

Save the Children organization said that, last year, it had been confronted with allegations of abuse involving minors by its own field staff and three of the complaints proved to be true. The abusers were dismissed from the organization.
