Great Britain’s Secretary for culture said that he plans to work with United States President Elect Barack Obama to implement new rules regarding English language Web sites and the bettering of Internet police.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Britain’s minister for culture Andy Burnham said that the British Government will try to discuss with the Obama administration and see whether thy can agree on an international system of ratings and rules for English language Web sites.
The rating system proposed by Mr. Burnham would be similar to movie ratings. The rating system would prove very useful in containing instances of indecency online, along with copyright and libel incidents.
Mr. Burnham, who is Britain’s secretary of state for culture, media and sport, told the newspaper that the people who created the Internet were very aware of the fact that they were creating a space that governments couldn’t reach and that was in fact one of their main goals.
“I think we are having to revisit that stuff seriously now," he said. "I think there is definitely a case for clearer standards online.
"More ability for parents to understand if their child is on a site, what standards it is operating to. What are the protections that are in place?"
Mr. Burnham, who characterized the Internet as “quite a dangerous place,” underlined that this was not a campaign against free speech. He, a father of three children, gave the example of a 9 p.m. television "watershed" in Britain before which programs containing violence of similar content harmful for children can not be broadcast. He noted that a rating system similar to the one employed by the Motion Picture Association of America would do the job.
