News about the long-term patient file snooping at the UCLA Medical
Center were recently
presented to the public.
According to James Duckstad, a former hospital employee, the
issues on the breach of patient intimacy was a well-known concern ever since
1995 when a group of workers was fired for accesing some confidential records.
He has also admitted to looking up files out of boredom.
"It was news throughout the whole hospital that
employees were fired for screwing around in the computer. This was in 1995, and
here we are 13 years later — and either they didn't follow the policy or people
didn't take it that seriously," Duckstad said, according to the Associated
Press.
The more recent events involved a group of the Medical Center’s employees and pop star Britney
Spears’s medical records. Apparently, at least 50 UCLA staffers accessed her
files on two different ocasions without any treatment-related interest.
Even though some may believe that the Center’s officials
take the matter lightly, the AP quoted the head of the UCLA Hospital System,
Dr. David Feinberg, saying that the breaches are being taken "extremely
seriously. If we failed in the past, we will do everything we can to improve
our systems."
Past such incidents were linked to pop star Mariah Carey,
actress Farrah Fawcett, California first lady Maria Shriver, actors
Tom Cruise and Dom DeLuise and many more, some of them being unfortunate enough
to find significant medical information from their files in different tabloids
across the country.
