Smoking is severely frowned upon in the United States. Smoking in bars, restaurants, some hotel rooms and most public places is prohibited.
The most recent institution to take a stand on smoking is the University of Buffalo. From now on, all the smokers on campus will have to find another smoking area, as smoking on campus is now 100% prohibited. This includes the dormitories, the classes, the grounds and basically any spot in the perimeter of the University.
The new policy that will be adopted by the University of Buffalo, which is a completely non-smoking one, is meant to aid in fighting against smoking and the life-threatening diseases it causes. One of the most harmful effects of smoking is, obviously, developing lung cancer, which entails a slow and painful death. The officials of the University of Buffalo want to promote a healthy environment not only for students, but also for all the staff, including teachers, and, of course, visitors. The policy also bodes well for the University when it comes to prospective students visiting the campus.
The policy of the University of Buffalo is part of a bigger campaign, called the UBreathe Free Initiative, which also implies a program meant to help smokers quit their nasty, dangerous habit. The methods used to deter smokers from cigarettes are several cessation tools, and, of course, support. The program is being carried out in collaboration with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the New York State Smokers Quitline, the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition, Tobacco Cessation Center North and the New York State Department of Health.
