Tyson Pleads Guilty, Runs Out Of Second Chances?

Mike Tyson, former world heavyweight boxing champion and one of the most well-known figures in boxing, just pleaded guilty Monday to charges of drug possession and DUI (driving under influence) related to an incident last year, when Mike was pulled over at a traffic stop and he was seen wiping a white substance from his dashboard.

Tyson acknowledged in court that the white substance was cocaine and he was impaired in the night when the incident happened. He was leaving the Scottsdale's Pussycat Lounge nightclub and was stopped for reckless driving in Scottsdale on Dec. 29.

The police officer that pulled Tyson over said he saw the super-star boxer wiping a white substance off the dashboard of his black BMW, and when he addressed him he realized Tyson had difficulties articulating words. According to the official statement, bags of cocaine were found in Mike's pocket and in his car.

In the dialog with the police officers that followed, Tyson said he used cocaine "whenever I can get my hands on it," and despite he was having eloquence problems he bragged about his way of smoking it.

Mike prefers to smoke cocaine in Marlboro cigarettes with the tobacco pulled out, the court documents read. He also smoked marijuana that day and was taking the antidepressant Zoloft.

Since his arrest, Tyson entered an in-patient treatment program for his "various addictions."
Tyson’s lawyer David Chesnoff had said that he had tried to keep his client out of prison.

"You never know," Chesnoff said. "If there had been more people interested in his well-being and health along the way, we wouldn't be here now."

In a statement earlier this year, County Attorney Andrew Thomas underlined that Tyson should be jailed if convicted.

"He has run out of second chances, at least in my book," Thomas said referring at Tyson’s previous run-ins with the law. The famous boxer was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992 and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland in 1999.

"Iron Mike", the youngest man to have won a world heavyweight title, now faces a maximum of four years and three months in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 19.

Tyson managed to win the heavyweight title at the age of 20 after knocking out Trevor Berbick in 1986. Four years later he lost the belt when he was knocked out by underdog James "Buster" Douglas.
