Two UK Troops Killed in Helicopter Crash in Iraq

On Tuesday night a RAF Puma helicopter crashed in Iraq killing two British military personnel. The helicopter crashed near Baghdad according to the Ministry of Defense (MoD).

When the helicopter came down two other people were injured.

The cause of the crash is not known yet and the Ministry of Defense said that it was too early to tell, Reuters reports.

The relatives of the victims have been informed.

The two people injured were recovering in the hospital.

A statement issued on Wednesday said: “Two other personnel were seriously injured, but are now recovering in hospital. It is too early to speculate on the cause of the crash,"

The accident is going to be investigated by a RAF Board of Inquiry.

A spokesman of Ministry of Defense said: “It is too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. An RAF Board of Inquiry has already been convened and is en route to Iraq to conduct its investigations. Our thoughts are with the families at this very difficult time."

No confirmation was made by the Ministry of Defense regarding which services those killed belong to. Also, no confirmation was made if they were engaged in Special Forces operations.

The incident is not believed to be the result of enemy attack.

On Tuesday the U.S. military issued a statement saying that a helicopter crashed near the town of Salman Park, near Baghdad, on Tuesday.

Two people were killed and other 12 were injured.

The initial reports said that the crash was not the result of an enemy attack.

A spokesman of the Ministry of Defense could not confirm if it was the same accident.

Still, details of the incident seem to match.

Since the hostilities began in March 2003, the number of UK troops killed in operations in Iraq reached the death toll of 173, including the deaths on Tuesday.
